Morgan Rogers appears prepared to fill various roles for Chelsea throughout the campaign while Cole Palmer is expected to play a crucial part in helping his fresh colleague settle in quickly.
Chelsea secured Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth £117million earlier this summer. The former Villa favourite gave Xabi Alonso a glimpse of his capabilities when he linked up effectively with Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer to mark his debut for the club with a goal.
Within the first fifteen minutes of the friendly against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Rogers seized upon a stray ball inside the six-yard area, firing past Alex Remiro from point-blank range. The 24-year-old had stationed himself alongside Pedro, with Palmer positioned just outside the penalty box.
Rogers predominantly operated on the left side of the compact front three; on that occasion, he sensed an opportunity and essentially formed a partnership up front. He emphasised that football is a collective effort involving eleven players on the field, and whatever responsibility is assigned to him, whether by the manager or fellow players, he intends to fulfil to the best of his capabilities.
He stated that he is not someone who insists on being the primary scorer or creator. His primary concern is making contributions, generating opportunities, and doing whatever is required to help the team find the net and secure victories.
Regarding how he and Palmer intend to maximise each other’s abilities, Rogers explained that mutual support is essential. He noted that they possess distinct qualities and different approaches to influencing matches. By playing off one another and complementing each other’s strengths and weaknesses, they can be effective together.
He mentioned that they execute numerous actions differently. Ultimately, the objective centres on scoring, creating chances, and connecting play. They achieve these goals through their own individual methods. Even when a particular match may favour one of them more than the other, both can still make their presence felt.
The focus remains on supporting each other alongside the rest of the squad, learning from one another, and striving to produce the strongest possible Chelsea side.
Alonso will be pleased to learn that Rogers is willing to operate anywhere across the pitch, particularly given that he has recently detailed his intention to eventually test both Rogers and Palmer in central midfield roles, among various other positions.
