When Jordan Henderson completed his move to Chelsea, many viewed it as one of the most unexpected signings of the summer transfer window

If anyone can relate to Jordan Henderson’s experience joining Chelsea at 36, it’s Gary McAllister. Back in 2000, McAllister was 35 when he completed his switch from Coventry City to Liverpool.
The football community was bewildered by the decision. Reports suggested Steven Gerrard was incensed. McAllister possessed valuable wisdom and extensive top-flight knowledge, but his most productive years had clearly passed.
Yet his expertise and understanding proved valuable. Liverpool went on to claim the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup and the League Cup during Gerard Houllier’s tenure. Over two decades later, Henderson is the veteran joining Chelsea from Brentford, seemingly in an attempt to provide much-needed know-how and composure to a side often criticised for lacking both qualities.
In a one-to-one conversation with Football.London conducted on behalf of BOYLE Sports at the launch of their new Motherwell branch, McAllister stated that his arrival attracted scepticism, with critics questioning why the club was pursuing an aging midfielder, describing him simply as a bald Scottish player.
When discussing with Gerard Houllier, it was made clear that regular starting appearances were not guaranteed, and McAllister acknowledged he understood this situation. His role was intended to support an impressive crop of young talent.
The squad included non-British players such as Patrik Berger, Vladimir Smicer and Sami Hyypia, who were still developing. McAllister’s aim was to assist these individuals through their midweek and weekend schedules and demonstrate the required mentality.
However, McAllister had to demonstrate his physical capabilities remained intact. Pre-season proved crucial in his mind, requiring him to prove his worth. While Liverpool teammates likely never questioned his technical ability, the concern was whether he could still compete athletically.
McAllister is confident Henderson will similarly need to demonstrate to Chelsea’s squad over recent weeks that he can still contribute effectively. McAllister earned recognition for finishing among the top five or six performers during pre-season training.
McAllister arrived at Anfield as a former league champion with Leeds United, but Henderson’s achievements are even more impressive, boasting Premier League and Champions League victories alongside two League Cups, an FA Cup and a Club World Cup.

McAllister considers Henderson’s decorated history a significant benefit, noting that Henderson takes considerable pride in his physical condition and works closely with the club’s sports science specialists. The parallels between their situations are certainly apparent.
However, Henderson has achieved more than McAllister had accomplished before joining another major club. McAllister had won the league with Leeds United and led his national team. Henderson, by contrast, has been a champion and secured Champions League glory. This provides excellent pedigree to bring to any club and help establish new foundations.
