Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers disagree over Player of the Match after Chelsea comeback

Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have continued their debate over who deserved individual recognition following Chelsea’s remarkable comeback triumph against Leeds United at Stamford Bridge.

The England internationals, who share a close friendship, produced outstanding performances in the Carabao Cup third-round encounter, though they hold differing opinions regarding the Player of the Match honour.

Rogers delivered a remarkable creative display, providing four assists as the west London club netted six times after the interval to overturn a deficit and secure a 6-3 victory over Leeds.

Palmer contributed two goals to the remarkable turnaround and received the official Player of the Match accolade from Sky Sports.

The broadcaster’s tradition involves interviewing two players from the victorious side, with one presenting the award to their teammate.

Rogers, however, maintained that the recognition should have gone in the opposite direction.

When questioned about whether he would present the trophy to Palmer, Rogers replied that such an outcome was regrettable.

The disagreement originated during Wednesday evening’s post-match discussion and persisted into Thursday, with neither player prepared to concede their position.

Despite this exchange, Rogers was honoured with Chelsea’s own Star of the Match distinction, with the club sharing an image of the 24-year-old on their official social media platform to acknowledge his contribution.

Palmer responded with a question mark before Rogers posted a response suggesting supporters understood his viewpoint.

Alonso, whose side secured passage to the next round of the competition, remained unconcerned with individual accolades, focusing instead on the pair’s attacking output.

Both players have enjoyed an impressive beginning to the campaign.

Across five appearances in all competitions, Palmer has registered four goals alongside one assist, while Rogers has found the net twice and supplied four assists.

The duo proved instrumental in overcoming Leeds, though the match did not unfold according to Alonso’s initial strategy.

The manager had elected to bench both players, prioritising their fitness for the Premier League fixture against Hull City.

Chelsea trailed at the interval, prompting Alonso to introduce Palmer, Rogers, Reece James and Pedro Neto from the substitutes’ bench.

Despite falling further behind shortly after their introduction, the hosts eventually prevailed 6-3 in the capital.

Alonso indicated to journalists after the match that circumstances would arise for all individuals throughout the season.
