Chelsea achieved what appeared to be an improbable task on transfer deadline day by significantly reducing their squad size and circumventing a problematic scenario with FIFA regulations.
The final day of the transfer window proved particularly active for the club concerning player departures.
FIFA PRO recently announced that so-called bomb squads, which involve players excluded from the first-team setup training separately, would be prohibited going forward.
The west London club had previously employed this practice with their bloated roster.
The governing body stated that players would receive enhanced protection against such exploitative methods.
The new regulations explicitly ban demoting players, isolating them through separate training as a means of coercion, retaining travel documents, or misusing registration processes.
Twenty-five days before the deadline, the club’s first-team roster contained 46 individuals.
Consequently, the focus in the final days centred on facilitating player exits to prevent new head coach Xabi Alonso from inheriting an unwieldy squad with numerous unavailable players.
During the concluding week alone, the club facilitated the departure of ten squad members through either loan arrangements or permanent transfers.
Among those securing permanent moves, striker Liam Delap transferred to Nottingham Forest in a transaction potentially worth £50 million.
Forward David Datro Fofana departed for Swiss outfit Servette FC.
Nicolas Jackson completed a move to Aston Villa in a deal reaching £65 million.
Loan departures included Caleb Wiley joining Preston and Mamadou Sarr moving to Real Sociedad.
Deadline day witnessed additional departures.
The most substantial exit saw midfielder Enzo Fernandez leave for Manchester City in a £125 million transaction.
Defender Tosin Adarabiyo departed permanently for Tottenham, while midfielder Mykhailo Mudryk joined the same north London club on a temporary basis.
The closing hours also saw Dario Essugo move to Strasbourg on loan, Robert Sanchez join Como temporarily, and Marc Guiu complete a permanent transfer to RB Leipzig.
These final-day activities reduced Chelsea’s squad from 46 players to 30.
Premier League regulations permit clubs to register a maximum of 25 senior players, with those under 21 years of age placed on a separate unlimited list.
Among those qualifying for that category are Josh Acheampong and Estavao.
The club did attempt to sign a player during the final hours, having negotiated a deal for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, though that transfer collapsed at the last moment.
Nevertheless, regarding departures, the closing days represented a successful period that mitigates a potential regulatory issue for Alonso until the January transfer period opens in a few months.
