Chelsea have handed one of their high-profile players a contract running until 2034, though he is not the only member of Xabi Alonso’s squad tied to such a lengthy deal.
Joao Pedro has pledged his long-term commitment to the club after putting his signature on an extension that keeps him at Stamford Bridge until 2034. However, the Brazilian is not the sole player at the club currently committed for that duration.
Despite speculation about a possible departure when the transfer window began, Alonso’s side have secured Pedro’s stay for the time being. The 24-year-old found the net 20 times during the previous campaign and was voted the club’s Player of the Year.
For his efforts, he has taken on the number nine shirt and signed new terms lasting an impressive eight years. Chelsea’s fondness for extended contracts is well known, but there is only one other standout player who can claim such an agreement: the young Geovany Quenda, who has yet to make a competitive appearance for the club.
Quenda was born in Guinea-Bissau but relocated to Portugal at a young age, beginning his youth career with CF Damaiense in Amadora in 2016.
His ability was evident for all to witness and one of Portugal’s major clubs came calling. Benfica captured him and the wide player spent two seasons at their academy before joining Sporting CP at age 12.
At the Cristiano Ronaldo Academy, he thrived and was already featuring for the club’s reserves at 16. It was former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim who handed him his senior debut against Porto in the 2024 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira two years ago, and he celebrated the moment by scoring.
This meant Quenda surpassed Ronaldo as Sporting’s youngest ever goalscorer at 17 years and 95 days old. The 2024/25 season under Amorim served as the winger’s breakthrough, as he featured 54 times, helping his side secure the league title while being named the Primeira Liga Young Player of the Season.
Records continued to fall for Quenda. He received his first senior Portugal call-up in August 2024 and became Sporting’s youngest Champions League goalscorer last season. Unsurprisingly, Europe’s leading clubs had taken notice. In March 2025, Chelsea agreed a £40million fee for the teenager and in July, he put his name to a remarkable eight-year contract running through June 30, 2034.
With Alonso now as manager, Quenda fits the boss’s high-intensity approach, providing versatility as a wide attacker or pressing wing-back with excellent dribbling and cross delivery. He made his Chelsea bow in a 3-0 pre-season victory over AC Milan and showed promise.
A start against Johor Darul Ta’zim followed and on the right flank, Quenda was once again full of energy with his pressing from wing-back. That match finished 3-3 and he also came on in the 76th minute for the Blues’ final game against Real Sociedad.
Now, he joins Pedro in the matchday squad for Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, looking to demonstrate he has justified his remarkable eight-year deal like his Brazilian colleague.
