Chelsea 2-2 Hull: Joao Pedro snatches late equaliser as Blues drop points at home

Chelsea secured a point in a 2-2 stalemate with Hull City at their west London home on Saturday.

The hosts twice fell behind but managed to rescue a draw through Joao Pedro’s late intervention.

The match saw Morgan Rogers open the scoring for the home side during the early stages.

The strike marked the fourth consecutive league fixture where Chelsea had found the net first.

Following a Hull corner, the Tigers were caught on the counterattack, with Rogers finishing past Konstantinos Tzolakis at the goalkeeper’s near post.

Hull responded before half-time, taking a 2-1 advantage into the break.

Mohamed Belloumi struck twice, first capitalising on a Jorrel Hato error in the box, then converting from a set-piece situation after more unconvincing defending from the Blues.

Despite sustained pressure after the interval, Chelsea could not find a third goal at the Bridge.

Chelsea’s forward line once again compensated for defensive vulnerabilities.

Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro have established themselves as a potent attacking unit this season.

Bobby Vincent rated the Chelsea players as follows: Emiliano Martinez returned between the posts following a midweek rest.

The goalkeeper looked uncertain during Hull’s opening corner when he stumbled after gathering the ball, though this incident paradoxically enabled Chelsea’s opening goal.

Martinez’s positioning proved inadequate for Belloumi’s second goal, as he challenged for the crossbar delivery but was beaten in the air by Semi Ajayi.

Rating: 4 Malo Gusto struggled defensively for Belloumi’s opening goal.

Operating at right-back, the French international needed to prevent the cross from Ryan Giles but failed to do so.

Rating: 4 Wesley Fofana showed promise when in possession, frequently advancing with the ball at his feet.

The centre-back produced one of Chelsea’s more solid defensive displays, though competition for that accolade was limited.

Rating: 6 Levi Colwill’s first significant contribution was a crucial clearance that launched the counter-attack leading to Rogers’ goal.

Defensively, the defender appears currently below his usual high standards.

Rating: 5 Jorrel Hato delivered a particularly poor performance for Belloumi’s first goal.

The Dutchman allowed the ball to bounce inside the penalty area, misjudged its trajectory, and the opportunity fell to Belloumi, who produced an excellent strike.

Hato was withdrawn at half-time.

Rating: 3 Reece James showed occasional looseness in possession and found it difficult to provide defensive solidity, particularly during an opening period when Chelsea appeared vulnerable.

His performance improved notably after the restart.

Rating: 6 Romeo Lavia did not produce his finest display but faced difficulties imposed by the tactical setup.

Hull created numerical advantages in midfield at times, leaving Lavia exposed.

Rating: 5 Pedro Neto passed up an early opportunity to double the advantage and found involvement limited.

The winger delivered several threatening deliveries into the penalty area.

Rating: 6 Cole Palmer began brightly, nearly setting up Rogers in the first half despite slightly wayward execution.

The playmaker delivered when it mattered most, producing something from nothing on the left flank to create Joao Pedro’s equaliser.

Rating: 7 Morgan Rogers produced an excellent early finish and appears increasingly like the marquee signing of the transfer window, even at a cost of £117million.

His influence diminished as the contest progressed.

Rating: 7 Joao Pedro played a significant role in Rogers’ opening goal, providing the assist before finding the net himself with an accomplished finish.

The Brazilian, recently named Premier League Player of the Month, drew Chelsea level.

Rating: 8 Pep Chavarria entered the field at half-time in place of Hato, bringing immediate pace and energy.

The substitute offered greater attacking threat during the second half.

Rating: 6 Valentin Barco came on for Lavia in the 70th minute, providing some tidy play without dramatically altering the game’s outcome.

The substitute showed willingness.

Rating: 6 Danny Welbeck replaced Gusto in the 77th minute but could not make the anticipated impact.

The substitution may have arrived too late.

Rating: 6 Estevao Willian entered late for Neto in the 86th minute, with insufficient time to influence proceedings.

Rating: N/A Maxence Lacroix came on for Fofana in the 86th minute, an unexpected substitution given Chelsea’s need to find a winner.
