Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence that Enzo Fernandez can win over the club’s critics, though he stopped short of confirming whether the Argentine will still be at Stamford Bridge after next month’s transfer window closes.
The 25-year-old playmaker has been participating in Chelsea training sessions over the past fortnight while speculation about his potential departure continues to swirl. Premier League champions Manchester City are understood to be tracking Fernandez closely, with the player having made clear to Chelsea’s hierarchy earlier this year that he wished to pursue a new challenge. However, no formal bids have been submitted to the west London club as things stand.
Fernandez came on as a substitute during Saturday’s pre-season victory over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge. The reception from home fans was mixed, with some jeering his appearance while others showed their backing by chanting his name.
With Chelsea beginning their league campaign at neighbours Fulham on Monday evening, Alonso suggested Fernandez possesses the ability to convert his doubters into supporters.
The Spanish coach indicated that such situations are commonplace in professional football and emphasised the importance of unity between players and supporters when competitive action gets underway. He expressed his view that everyone associated with the club needs to work together toward the same objectives.
Regarding the divided reaction Fernandez received, Alonso described it as unremarkable and stated the club continues to stand behind him. The former Liverpool midfielder praised Fernandez’s quality and significance to the squad while noting the positive mentality he displays during training sessions and the productive working relationship between coaching staff and the player.
When questioned about whether Fernandez had signalled an intention to remain with Chelsea, Alonso declined to provide specific reassurances beyond highlighting the player’s strong application in training and professional approach. He stressed that the focus remains on preparing thoroughly for the new league season.
Alonso also offered limited insight into how Fernandez might feature in his tactical plans if he stays. He indicated the midfielder is capable of operating in both deeper and more advanced roles within the team structure. The coach highlighted Fernandez’s technical qualities and vision, noting his ability to execute short passes as well as longer balls and his capacity to progress play effectively.
