Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville identified out-of-favour Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez as a possible answer to Chelsea’s struggles in goal. The pundit was scathing of Robert Sanchez following the Spaniard’s errors that directly contributed to Fulham’s goals.

Neville stressed that gambling on a goalkeeper carries enormous risk given the scrutiny the position attracts, suggesting Alonso might need to act within the coming week to bring in someone battle-hardened. He acknowledged the head coach’s desire to succeed but indicated protecting the club’s interests must take priority.
The Argentine World Cup winner has faced persistent speculation over his future amid links to a Saudi switch and Manchester United in recent years. Juventus expressed interest this summer yet a transfer failed to materialise, leaving Martinez sidelined as Japan international Zion Suzuki arrived from Parma on the back of an impressive international tournament.
While Neville questioned whether Martinez would be attainable, Unai Emery must decide whether to cash in on the 33-year-old, despite him having three years remaining on his Villa Park contract. Villa’s heavy 4-0 opening-day defeat to Brighton may prompt a rethink regarding their own goalkeeping arrangements.
With Sanchez’s jittery showing threatening to undermine what promises to be a positive campaign for Alonso’s side, former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher cautioned that failing to address the goalkeeping situation this summer could prove a costly oversight.
He expressed concern about defensive solidity and the goalkeeper position while acknowledging the team’s attacking quality, suggesting the goalkeeping issue would continue to cause problems. Carragher noted this was not a new observation, pointing out that Sanchez’s continued presence in goal would prevent Chelsea from mounting a title challenge. He cited a clear pattern where the previous three league champions had all upgraded their goalkeeper, referencing how Pep Guardiola brought in Ederson for Manchester City, Liverpool acquired Alisson, and Arsenal’s title prospects transformed after signing Raya to replace Ramsdale. Carragher stressed that throughout football history, the vast majority of successful managers had sought goalkeepers capable of winning them championships.
