Pedro Neto showed his frustration after Reece James confronted him over an error during Chelsea’s triumph over Fulham.
The Portuguese wideman, who entered the fray as a substitute for Malo Gusto during the closing stages of Monday’s encounter at Craven Cottage, took umbrage when the captain offered pointed observations about his play, resulting in a frank on-field discussion.
Shortly after Neto’s introduction, Chelsea found themselves in a promising position to launch a swift break and exploit Fulham’s numerical disadvantage at the back. Estevao Willian spearheaded the initiative down the right flank, with the Portugal international sprinting to provide support.
Following a breakdown in communication, the attack faltered and the Blues carelessly surrendered possession around the halfway mark. Instead of positioning himself to receive a return pass and unlock space, Neto sprinted along the sideline, anticipating a threaded ball.
Shea Charles stepped in to intercept the delivery, leaving Chelsea suddenly exposed in transition. Had James, operating in a central role, not rushed across to fill the vacancy at right-wing back and regain the ball, Ryan Sessegnon would have led a three-against-four onslaught on the Chelsea penalty area.
After extinguishing another potential crisis and preventing embarrassment for Neto, the Chelsea skipper rose to his feet and made his feelings unmistakably clear regarding the mix-up. As he thrust his right arm forward, James could be seen issuing instructions to the pair.
The Portuguese attacker maintained his innocence while returning to his station, sparking an animated exchange. The Blues captain, gesturing toward Neto, offered his own perspective.
Subsequently, the former Wolves man, whom Chelsea splashed out £54million on in August 2024, appeared to silence James by placing a finger to his lips. As Fulham shifted play toward the left side of the pitch, the England international delivered the parting shot, prompting a sarcastic double nod from Neto.
The 26-year-old currently finds himself in a precarious position regarding his future, with the possibility of departing before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, September 1. Sources indicate that Al-Hilal has expressed interest this summer, alongside several Premier League sides.
While Chelsea have yet to receive any official approaches for the Portugal international, they are cognisant of the attention surrounding him. Despite not actively seeking a sale for a player they consider significant, hierarchy at Stamford Bridge remain open to negotiations should an acceptable offer emerge.
It is believed they have slapped a price tag near £100million on him, reflecting the inflated nature of the current market. Real Madrid’s recent £120million expenditure on Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig set a lofty precedent for wide players this transfer period.
Meanwhile, Liverpool were quoted £145million by Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola.
